I’ve always been a fan of voles. They’re so cute.
Did you know that some species of voles form lifelong, monogamous partnerships? This is brilliant, and it’s rare in the animal kingdom – fewer than five percent of mammals are habitually monogamous.
Wonderfully, there is even a book called Make Love Like A Prairie Vole, which shows us what we can learn from these little heroes.
Meanwhile, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioural science explains here that voles’ monogamy is related to oxytocin and vasopressin hormones. Scientists are now using that understanding to research treatments for autism.
