I am reading a book called The Boy, in which Israeli historian Dan Porat unravels the story around perhaps the most powerful image of the Holocaust. It is the image of a Jewish boy, with his hands up, outside the Warsaw Ghetto.
This morning, Gaza terrorists again scheduled their rocket fire to coincide with the time that children, just like the one in that photograph, are taken to school. It is only a combination of Israel’s civil defence infastructure, cancelled school days, and sheer luck that prevent these terrorists from successfully killing and maiming on the scale they dream of.
Israel has friends in many places. Yet as the south is bombarded, the world is largely silent, save the clearing of a few throats in preparation for a fresh round of finger-wagging ‘naughty naughties’ to be directed at Israel when it acts to defend itself against this menace.
It is the very possibility of defence that is the most significant difference between the era in which the photograph was taken, and now. Israel’s regional enemies are plentiful, murderous and determined. Many of Israel’s obsessive critics around the world are driven by misunderstandings, prejudice and the glow that comes from bullying consensus.
Yet the Jewish people now have a state and an army. The world can criticise both all it likes, they keep photographs like this one where they should be – in the past.

Wow! I have been complaining about this for weeks. You call it for what it is, in just a few sentences. Well done on an excellent bit of writing!
Your piece is the best reason I have heard as to why it is important for Jews to be able to proclaim after 2,000 years that it is important for us as a People to have the opportunity, “Lehiyot Am Chofshi B’Artzenu”, to be a free People in our Land.
Chas and Steve. Thank you for excellent article Chas. I bleed seeing the picture.. There are no words.
Steve, I echo everything you say. Well said.
This is such a powerful article. Why it even impressed none other than George Galloway who was moved to retweet it !
Haha, for the story behind Michael’s comment read this: http://cifwatch.com/2012/11/11/george-galloway-tweets-for-israel/
George, I salute your courage, your strength and your gullibility!
What a great article Chas, concise and insightful and elegant. Thank you.
Thanks!
How about Israel not supplying these Islamo fascists with water, electricity, food and fuel while they are trying to kill Jews.
Only Jews do that. What next? Send Swiss chocolate in return for every rocket?
Israel needs to stop playing defense to the thousands of rockets being fired at them and punish the Gaza regime and its terrorists where it hurts. Cut the electricity to Gaza and turn Gaza into a parking lot.
Why does Islamic Jihad and Hamas send rockets from a school praying that the other side return fire and kill some of it’s children. That’s Gaza today. The Arabs are the only people in the world that go out day by day figuring ways to get their children to die in front of the world press.
What a sick demented society these Pals are.
Then again, the Pals know The Guardian wont criticize Palestinian child abuse.
You are right. Why does the UN not try to protect Gaza children from radicalised parents and politicians WHO RECRUIT THEIR OWN CHILDREN AND YOUTH TO SACRIFICE THEIR LIVES TO KILL AND MAIN OTHERS.
You Palestinians are nothing but crack pipe welfare recipients.
You get billions of international aid, and some of it comes from Israel and the US. Why don’t you make lives of yourselves, make businesses, farming etc. and learn how to to work for your families instead of wasting all the money on C-4. I’m against abortions, but you are the exception..

Gaza Savages Time Rockets to Kill Children
Direct hit reported on a home in Sderot. More than 100 rockets hit today, many timed for end of the school day.
Gil Ronen
11/11/2012,
A direct strike on a home in Sderot was reported after 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening, as Gaza terrorists continued to fire a barrage of missiles at Israeli civilian men, women and children.
Initial reports said no one was injured despite the direct hit.
Many of the rockets fired Sunday were timed for the end of the school day, in order to try and kill or maim children. More than 100 rockets were fired during the day.
A Be’er Sheva resident named Barbara told Arutz Sheva: “They timed the attack at just the time all the kids got out of school…mine too!! First time I was ever close to hysterical was today.”
“This has to stop,” said Gershon, another resident of “the capital of the Negev.”
“The rocket attack was at 13:58,” he said, “when all the kids were walking home from school and I was on my way to pick up my daughter. The whole city should keep their children home until the rocket attacks stop.”
There isn’t a single country in the world that would show the degree of patience and tolerance that Israel has demonstrated.
But all things must come to an end, and it really is time for Gaza to come to an end. It was a failed experiment, anyway — the terrorists “Palestinians” aren’t capable of normal life.

well if George G is reading your blog now, I’d like to take this opportunity to tell him how very, very little I respect him
Would you like…him….to be… the cat?
As far as I’m concerned, that’s the pinnacle of his career!
You really had George licked! Well done! You’re the cat who got the cream.
Ed so don’t let them have a state. Maybe one big happy family from the river to the sea is in their best interests anyway.

The silence of the world’s press and the world’s governments where the Palistinian terrorists are concerned, sickens me to my stomach! The way that they blame and condemn Israel continually for simply defending their own – and for refusing to let circumstances arise again such as arose in Europe during the second world war – IS mindblowing!!! NOT ONE OF THESE PIOUS NATIONS WOULD STAND BY AND LET PALESTINE ATTACK THEIR COUNTRIES AS THEY ARE ATTACKING ISRAEL!!! God Bless Israel always and may His Shalom Rest upon Jerusalem and Israel and His people always!!!
